Instagram Hashtag Generator
Find a mix of broad and niche Instagram hashtags for your post.
Hashtag strategy on Instagram used to mean filling all 30 slots. That's over: in December 2025 Instagram began limiting the caption of a post or Reel to five hashtags, saying a few targeted tags work better than many generic ones. With only five to spend, each tag has to describe what the post is actually about.
This free Instagram hashtag generator defaults to five. Describe your post and it suggests a mix of one or two broader topic tags and more specific ones your audience might follow or search. Skip anything as generic as #instagood or #reels if it shows up; tags like that sit on a huge number of posts and tell Instagram nothing about yours.
Writing for several platforms at once? Raise the count to get more options, then keep the best five for Instagram. Pair the tags with a caption from the Instagram caption generator and schedule both with the PostJay Instagram scheduler.
Frequently asked questions
How many hashtags can I use on Instagram?
Five per post or Reel. Instagram announced the change from the old limit of 30 in December 2025 and rolled it out gradually. The generator defaults to five so the whole list fits.
Do hashtags still help on Instagram?
They help Instagram understand what a post is about and let people find it by topic. Instagram's leadership has long said they aren't a reach booster on their own, so a strong post with a few relevant tags beats a weak one with many.
Should I use popular or niche hashtags?
Mostly specific ones. A very broad tag puts your post in a huge pool where it disappears quickly, while a specific tag (#sourdoughstarter rather than #food) reaches people who care about that exact topic. One broader tag plus a few specific ones is a good mix.
Is the Instagram hashtag generator free?
Yes, with no signup. Anonymous visitors get a few free generations per day, and a free PostJay account removes the limit.
